Before you can learn your keys in VDR, you have to create a configuration 
file for your remote using irrecord. So did you make sure mode2 shows any 
output? If that's the case, start lircd with your config file and make sure 
irw gives any output. Then you can try VDR.

BTW: I currently have the effect that lirc only starts up cleanly on the 
second load of the module.

Not really...

Ah, maybe you'd like to have a look at my root-fs (which is for a diskless 
client as well) running on my MiniVDR... I've announced that a few minutes 
ago.
