[vdr] Converting VDR audio recordings to mp3...

Does anyone have a good method for converting vdr audio recordings, i.e.
froma radio channel, into a working mp3?

I've tried various options with mencoder and lame. Mencoder / mplayer
refuses to play or encode the stream (001.vdr, or whatever) and lame
produces an mp3 with lots of clicks and bangs in it! Xine can play the
001.vdr file with no artifacts.

I have been toying with the transfron plugin with varying results: some
things seem to work fine, whereas others take a day to encode a ew
minutes of video, at which point I give up! Trying to convert to mp3 was
taking a similar time, and then gave me a different bitrate from that
I'd asked for!

What format are audio-only recordings?
