Thanks for all the replies with regard to the dxr3.  I have tried
connecting with a 4-pin "S-VHS" cable, into a scart converter and have
been unable to get anything but a black screen.  It may be the card
itself, I got it very very cheap and it came with just the vga out cable
(which I have tested successfully under windows). 
Probably more likely is that in my haste to get it going under linux, I
haven't installed the drivers properly...
Is the anything more to installing a DXR3 for use with VDR than:
./configure
make
make install
./ldm
em8300setup

Did I miss out anything??

I'm trying to source a replacement DVB card but it looks like I'll have
to wait until after the festive season...meanwhile I guess I'll have to
clear some disk space and start some (long range) timeshifting... :-)
