I managed to over come this problem by following the instructions in ALSA 
web site
they have a fortune of documentation

Now I have vdr running on my machine
sound is ok

But , I have a very bad picture which is offsetted to the middle of the 
screen and it is cluttered .
I use Softdevice plugin as I do not have ahardware MPEG encoder
