As you know DVB is much more than TV standard, but it is very hard to use terms when there is no term. DVB can broadcast HDTV and AC3/DTS, so DVB will stay, but I hope that for new displays people are acquiring, they want same quality from sources. And I think that in 10 years majority of sold TV sets could be plasma/tft/some other compared today's TV's with big tubes and "720x576" grid for electron gun. I think TV business is currently changing. Youth are not so keen to live TV, a new generation of people are growing with TiVo, Replay TV, VDR, Myth TV etc. So they are used to watch TV when appropriate, not when episode airs. And cap is very short to download content from computer network. Both are sort of time shifting. Also TV faces more competition from gaming industry. I have read that youth plays more than watch TV. This drives more towards time shifting TV. So perhaps one day we log on to studio's site, and download episode of your favorite TV-series (already dubbed to German by studio :-) and subtitles for all languages. And all in HD format protected by DRM, and you can watch episode when suitable to you. Why you have to wait in Europe 1 year for that episode to be broadcasted. It is reality today, you can have it from Internet after episode has aired in US. And naturally in HD format. Moves towards this direction is taken on music side if we compare FM/DVB radio and iTunes.. "I want my favorite song now". You could poll radio and record song from there when and if it airs. I think it is dream world because broadcasters do already up/downsample to their own picture standard. And I don't believe that is going to change. Euro1080 (or HD-1 nowadays) broadcasts with 50Hz all material. But I am against of up/downsampling. IMHO is much better to adapt display frequency to content, not vice versa (content to display). This way we could see 1080p24 material as good quality as possible, and for example not 1080i50 with 4% PAL-speedup, which changes also audio pitch. Or video judders for down converting 60i to 50i. You are right, set top box must be able to adapt content also, if display won't support 24p/48i mode, then it must be adapted to 50/60. I have find it difficult to find proper settings for high quality playback. Best have been (on windows side) using 72,75 and 90 Hz frame rates (adapted for content: cinema, pal or ntsc) and with directshow reclock-plugin. With this I've been able to eliminate judder from videos, or sound jumps. But immediately when source is 24fps and monitor is 75Hz, picture or sound jumps. I In US HDTV has introduced new(?) operators (Voom, INHD), it would be OK for me if there was HDTV operator in Europe providing content I like via satellite and have a subscription fee. I would consider HD-1 if they showed movies and series, or better sports than volleyball. unknown picture type?

Hi! About once a week I get this errors in syslog: Feb 25 20:01:19 server vdr[20828]: ERROR: unknown picture type '6' Feb 25 20:01:20 server vdr[20828]: ERROR: unknown picture type '7' Feb 25 20:01:21 server vdr[20828]: ERROR: unknown picture type '4' Feb 25 20:01:22 server vdr[20828]: ERROR: unknown picture type '7' Feb 25 20:01:23 server vdr[20828]: ERROR: unknown picture type '7' Feb 25 20:01:39 server vdr[20828]: ERROR: unknown picture type '5' Feb 25 20:01:42 server vdr[20828]: ERROR: unknown picture type '4' Feb 25 20:01:51 server vdr[20828]: ERROR: unknown picture type '7' Feb 25 20:01:52 server vdr[20828]: ERROR: unknown picture type '6' Feb 25 20:02:09 server last message repeated 3 times ... The recordings during this errors are "junk". I can't view this recordings. After stopping VDR and unloading the dvb-drivers the errors are gone. I searched with Google for this problem and found only the workaround to restart (automatically) VDR when this happens. Some folks also wrote that a bad singal from satellite could be the reason, but the femon-plugin shows this values: STR: 67% SNR: 88% BER: 0 UNC: 0 Are this bad values? (I don't think so.) What is the reason for the "unknown picture type"? I use Kernel 2.6.10, the DVB-drivers which come with 2.6.10 and VDR 1.2.26 on Gentoo-Linux with two FF Hauppauge Nexus-S-cards (rev2.1). minimum machine as streamdev client

Hi, Playing with streamdev I'm streaming from my hush to various machines around the house. My Vaio (400 Mhz Pentium II mobile [Celeron]) isn't up to the task. VLC uses much less CPU than vdr streamdev client but the machine still drops frames. What is the minimum CPU for a client machine? Tony

Problem cutting recording.

Hello! I have problems to cut Stephen Kings "Thinner" that was broadcasted yesterday on pro7. I have set cut-marks as usual. But when I start cutting, it stops immediately. Cutting other recordings still works as usual. I attached what I got in syslog at the end of the mail. Any ideas what is going wrong here and how I can fix it? hi sorry for the long waiting period. i finally finished my diploma thesis and got some free time to work on my MIDP mobile phone application for vdr. i compose this mail for three reasons: - the project is not dead :) - a second promise should motivate me... -> if anyone has an idea how to create a 3gp-video stream with Java (for JMF), please contact me. bye.

Hi, I just wanted to add that in NA, some FTA channels lose sync on playback as well. It is still true that "live" viewing always works properly. This may change your hypothesis a bit. It is similar to PAL 576i, which is actually 625i, but those about 50 scanlines are for sync signals and porches. 765p is odd, it should be 750p. HDTV 720p is 720 scanlines and 30 lines on porches and sync. So I am not sure about if your TV reports this as total number of lines, or are modelines wrong in your configuration. Best regards, Jori
