I can confirm that this is a serious problem that a lot of people have -
even with FF-cards. We discussed this in german vdrportal forum, and we have
not found a solution yet.

without success.
Also this patch http://linuxtv.org/pipermail/vdr/2005-November/006337.html
did not solve the problem - but it seems to take a few minutes longer until
the buffer is full.

I wonder why the buffer problem appears regularly on some machines and
others never report this issue.
