vdr-xine plugin http://home.vr-web.de/~rnissl/ read the docs, they cover
most issues regarding features and installation.

With a PJ I would suggest that the most critical thing to the setup
after cabling is deinterlace quality. xine wins out on this.
also best to use DVI where possible, ie any digital source.

I've been using vdr-xine since its release and the combination has been
stunningly stable. I've had more trouble with hardware than this
software. I started with the oxine frontend and later eboxy. oxine is
looking quite good again, although Im now working on my own using

You can get away with not using a seperate frontend by adding more vdr
plugins. I use the frontend to switch to a different xine setup to play 
dvds so I can get the best out of the material playing while using the 
same remote. The frontend is like a simple version of mythTV.
