The LNB (short of Low-Noise-Block) downconverts the RF signal down to a frequency band that can get transmitted with acceptable losses in coaxial cables to the Receivers.

Better LNBs can get controlled and configured automatically via DiSEqC2.x, you don't need to enter the LOF manually in your STB application anymore.
