I have this distortion, too. I first used a reiserfs partition
for recording and playback was terrible. Now I'm using ext2 and
it's much better. So it may have to do with file io, IMO.

Yes, it seems that the video & audio aren't in sync during fast
forward/back. Also audio has loud 'blops' sometimes. Maybe you should
mute audio.

I also had the problem that sometimes after jumping forward/back
audio isn't in sync with video anymore if you return to normal
playback. If you stop playback and resume, everything is ok.

I did so, but it seems to me, that there is a tuning problem (at
least with the new dvb card). After changing channel a few time,
I mostly either get from the driver

May 20 19:53:41 video kernel: outcommand error 1
May 20 19:53:43 video last message repeated 2 times
May 20 19:53:43 video kernel: dvb: ARM RESET

or from vdr

In both cases I only get a black screen an my TV. I have to stop
VDR and reload the driver to get it work again.

Maybe you call it a feature, but I think the toggle option '0'
during normal viewing isn't working as one would expect. It only
works if you change chanels by menu or by entering channel
number. If you change channels by quickly zapping over 4-5
channels it doesn't works. I have an satelite tuner which
remembers the start of such a fast zapping and if you stays for
longer than 5-6 secs in a channel, this one is take for the
toggle option. Complicated? Let's say I#m on channel 4 and start
zapping fast ->5->6->7->8 staying fewer than 5 secs in every
channel. Now the toggle option should toggle between 4 & 8.

I would agree, if I hadn't these tuning problems ...
