I use ac3play (0.4.0), and it works fine for me, no delay and no segfaults
(as in ac3play 0.1.0).

I think you should try this one. It can be found at
http://www.alsaplayer.org/

Btw.: I use alsa-0.9.4 driver with a hoontech card.
