Thank you.  That worked.  
 dvbstream -ps -f 505833 -o 600 601 | buffer -S 500K | ntuxplayer -d 1 -o
gets me BBC1.

Sorry for not replying earlier but it was a nice sunny weekend here in 
the UK :-).

Does anybody know if there is a way to tell vdr what device to use for 
output as you can with ntuxplayer?  I tried using vdr -D 1 but that 
option seems to relate to what card should be used for tuning-- not to 
the output.
