xawtv simply knows next-to-nothing about dvb.  It can only tune analog
TV stations.  Your options to watch dvb with xawtv are:

 * xawtv can pass keytrokes to vdr, so you can combine xawtv + vdr (see
   contrib/vdr.config in the xawtv tarball).
 * make xawtv run szap on hotkeys, using the [launch] section in
   .xawtv (=> man xawtvrc).
 * wait for xawtv 4.0 ;)
