Yes, that's what I thought. I was thinking about cutting my cable, since it
doesn't need to be quite so long, but I don't think it'll make any
difference.

Yes. I have to do this, otherwise lircd won't start.
I should have added: the LIRC modules load OK, lircd starts OK, and
*sometimes* I can run stuff like VDR and irw. However, most of the time
irw/VDR will cause lircd to trigger a kernel panic. If I kill the LIRC
serial module, I never get panics (but I can't use my remote!).
