As the others said, it's /dev/rtc, the real time clock. I think, mplayer
should work without it, though it would work better *with* it. So, if
you compiled your kernel yourself, do it again, but this time include
support for /dev/rtc:

'It's located in make menuconfig under "Character devices" -> "Enhanced
Real Time Clock Support".'
