That's really odd, since I can't reproduce this...

Ther is no error message in line 680 of recording.c.
That line looks like this in version 1.1.33:

     }

Do you get this with patches only?

The reason why this is not "standard" is that it is just a workaround for
Windows. Linux can well handle all the characters that are mapped to
#xx for Windows. So I see no reason why the "standard" should be what's
needed by a broken OS ;-)
