[vdr] dxr3 decoder vs software decoder..

i've been out of the loop on this list for a while now. When I looked at 
building a DVB/VDR system last year, the options where to use a fully 
functional DVB card or a cheap DVB card with a dxr3 decoder. 
There seems to be posts of a software only Xine pluggin to do pure software 
decoding?? 
My question is what are the current options for building a DVB/VDR? Can a 
cheap (no decoder) DVB card be used with a software (Xine) decoder and 
simple TVout card?? 
Or is it better to use the dxr3 card???
