There is another alternative called posix_fadvise, see man posix_fadvise

DESCRIPTION
Programs  can  use posix_fadvise to announce an intention to access file data 
in a specific pattern in the future, thus allowing the kernel to per      
form appropriate optimisations.

This looks very good, but this funktion does not work with Linux 2.4.x :-(((
