The main problem with this learning feature is, that it is quite dumb.
When the original code is e.g. 8 code sequences long, then you get a
learned code, that is 5-10 times longer as the raw code. For ordinary
equipment this works, but I had some difficulties with LIRC based
receivers.
I use a homebrew IRman (UIR) and did some tests with the simple serial
device (only the TSOP and a few other parts).

I use a MD4689. I set the "TV" and "VCR" device to code "087" and all
other codes to "000".
