Allthough I only have 2 speakers I only use AC3/PCM over optical cable. The reason is that I don't harm my speakers that way. With an analog cable I get this noise when turning on the computer. With digi cable I don't.

And it sounds better.

I have an over 6 year old Yamaha receiver and it can handle it.
So I consider myself being pro AC3-in-vanilla-VDR :)
