This is what I did.  Sascha gave me my answer as why I got that error.

However it still did nto compile: ttxtsub also needs the 
vdr-ttxtsubs-0.0.5-charset_fix-custom_color-for-developer-vdr.diff.gz

Patch to actually compile under 1.3.12.
