It does seem to be largely avoidable, though there are a few external uses of
shell scripts (/etc/vdr/*hooks/*).

The only significant thing is that it (as found in my 1.3.14 package) allows
better handling of vdr crashes (it can log the exit signal, although this
probably shouldn't be at priority 'info'). It also has an option to switch
off NPTL in case there should still be any problems, perhaps with some
plugin.

When it was written, the plugin parameter handling in the script version (in
the official Debian package) was broken.

There's possibly some breakage in the patchlevel checking, but I've not
noticed any problems...
