[linux-dvb] skystar 2 no longer functions

I have had to reinstall the linux partion of my system, just the 
operating system, not the /home.. partition. this is mandrake 10.1, 
2.6.8.1. I have recompiled the kernel to include the drivers and lsmod says

skystar2               25092  0
stv0299                12136  0
dvb-core               77288  2 skystar2,stv0299

although the lines in etc/modprobe.conf and the lines in rc.local no 
longer load at boot.

rc.local has modprobe skystar2

Nor does the call to script makedev-dvb.sh which used to create the 
devices on boot work.

However I create then by hand in dev

and scan/kaffeine etc cannot access them. Anyone have any ideas?
