my mailer was deamed to be "y2k-noncompliant" so I put that in to say that 
my mailer was still functioning after 01/01/2000

then I left it there after 2001 to be sure and never changed it...and now 
I don't remember where it is in the code.

well after applying this, I made a recording and my sync issues were gone.  
After further investigation, it seems they were drastically improved.  
Also I was missing less EPG sections as I downloaded the guide from the 
guide transponder.

but I was more excited about the recordings improvement.

I haven't tried dvb-net with it yet, as my dish is off-axis while I 
replace a bolt.
