I was beginning to suspect my lead to this PC from the amplifier, the 
other PC is running 2.6.18-rc7-smp (Athlon 64x2)  without problems and 
this one (XP300+ 32-bit) on 2.6.18 gives the errors. later today I shall 
boot the 64x2 on 2.6.18 to see if it has the same problem.
