What bother me most is the need to unplug and replug the device when I power off the pc] I just got a dvb-t usb stick from dealextreme. The dealextreme lottery gave me a siano sms1xxx based device, usb id 187f:0201. In the latest mercurial repository, this device requires the firmware dvb_nova_12mhz_b0.inp but it's nowhere to be found. I found some forum posting suggesting to use http://www.steventoth.net/linux/sms1xxx/sms1xxx-hcw-55xxx-dvbt-01.fw (renaming it to the name required by the driver), and I did and it worked. Then, out of curiosity, I also tried the 03 revision http://www.steventoth.net/linux/sms1xxx/sms1xxx-hcw-55xxx-dvbt-03.fw and it also worked. Since these firmwares are for hauppauge devices, I wonder if using them will have some undesirable side-effect or there's no problem. Oh, when I turn off the pc the stick is attached to (a vdr machine), it still supplies 5v to the usb ports, and when I turn it on again the stick fails. I have to unplug and replug it to make it work. Interestingly, in this older kernel which I use, I have the firmware to be loaded -r-xr-xr-x 1 beer drunkards 40096 2007-05-17 14:38 tdmb_stellar_usb.inp which does not correspond in size to the above, so I can't remember how I got it without finding an older system disk from which I copied this -- on which the other non-DAB/DMB mode firmwares would be found for size/checksum comparisons. Presumably this was from the accompanying CD-ROM, wherever that might be these days -- wait, I should be able to dig a second one from the packaging if I can find that, should you be particularly interested. In my source code at hand I find { USB_DEVICE(0x187f, 0x0201), .driver_info = SMS1XXX_BOARD_SIANO_NOVA_B }, for your device (capable of more than mine) and the corresponding firmware named as [SMS1XXX_BOARD_SIANO_NOVA_B] = { .name = "Siano Nova B Digital Receiver", .type = SMS_NOVA_B0, .fw[DEVICE_MODE_DVBT_BDA] = "sms1xxx-nova-b-dvbt-01.fw", }, Within another file I see some alternative names for the firmwares for my `stellar' device; in your case of a `nova' product a table can be found in the source file smscoreapi.c: static char *smscore_fw_lkup[][SMS_NUM_OF_DEVICE_TYPES] = { /*Stellar NOVA A0 Nova B0 VEGA*/ /*DVBT*/ {"none", "dvb_nova_12mhz.inp", "dvb_nova_12mhz_b0.inp", "none"}, /*DVBH*/ {"none", "dvb_nova_12mhz.inp", "dvb_nova_12mhz_b0.inp", "none"}, /*TDMB*/ {"none", "tdmb_nova_12mhz.inp", "none", "none"}, /*DABIP*/ {"none", "none", "none", "none"}, /*BDA*/ {"none", "dvb_nova_12mhz.inp", "dvb_nova_12mhz_b0.inp", "none"}, /*ISDBT*/ {"none", "isdbt_nova_12mhz.inp", "dvb_nova_12mhz.inp", "none"}, /*ISDBTBDA*/ {"none", "isdbt_nova_12mhz.inp", "isdbt_nova_12mhz_b0.inp", "none"}, /*CMMB*/ {"none", "none", "none", "cmmb_vega_12mhz.inp"} }; Looks like your device isn't capable of DAB/DAB+/DMB, and I'm puzzled to see the difference in firmwares between the ISDBT modes, but I'm unfamiliar with that operation. > I found some forum posting suggesting to use > http://www.steventoth.net/linux/sms1xxx/sms1xxx-hcw-55xxx-dvbt-01.fw > (renaming it to the name required by the driver), and I did and it worked. > Then, out of curiosity, I also tried the 03 revision > http://www.steventoth.net/linux/sms1xxx/sms1xxx-hcw-55xxx-dvbt-03.fw and > it also worked. > Since these firmwares are for hauppauge devices, I wonder if using them > will have some undesirable side-effect or there's no problem. In looking at the sms-cards.c source file, these Hauppauge rebrandings seem to be a change of the USB IDs, but the same firmwares are listed as are used by the Siano-sourced devices. In other words, there shouldn't be a problem, and they may well be identical. However, to set your mind at ease, I'd have to dig out my other copy of the firmwares to list file sizes and md5sums in order that you can see whether they match. > Oh, when I turn off the pc the stick is attached to (a vdr machine), it > still supplies 5v to the usb ports, and when I turn it on again the > stick fails. I have to unplug and replug it to make it work. As I managed to kill off my workstation, more than once, I see the same problem with other USB devices that get power through other means. I'd be inclined to believe this may be a problem in the USB stack, where it's not issuing a proper reset to restore the devices -- if this is possible with power supplied. Specifically, with one USB WLAN stick which receives external power, I have to re-plug it if I've brought it up to load the firmware. The other two USB WLAN sticks, one of similar type and one somewhat different but also similar, are the same, though they're powered from the machine -- after a cold boot, they work fine; after a warm reboot if they've loaded the firmware, they fail to respond properly to the attempt to firmware load or possibly to enumerate -- I'd have to actually reboot again to see where. I can't remember if the Siano USB device is the same way. For two other USB-attached DVB devices, one of which requires firmware loading, the other which doesn't, but both of which have their own power supplies, there's no problem. Another device which seems to have this problem is one external hard drive, which I've had to power externally, and it seems that after these reboots or crashes, it fails to get back to a useful state without replugging and reset. Another drive is fine, but may be getting its power switched by a USB hub. Those are just my observations -- as to whether this is a more general USB stack problem, or whether each driver for all these devices needs to be rewritten to handle this case of a device in a warm state, I don't know as I'm unfamiliar with the internal workings of USB or the devices. But this seems to be a common enough problem, particularly annoying with my USB WLAN sticks, that it should be tackled -- either a complete power cycle or re-plug cycle is needed after a normal reboot, which is painful. Particularly if done remotely. > _______________________________________________ > linux-dvb users mailing list > For V4L/DVB development, please use instead linux-media at vger.kernel.org thanks, barry bouwsma From leszek at koltunski.pl Thu Dec 3 09:12:04 2009 From: leszek at koltunski.pl (Leszek Koltunski) Date: Thu, 3 Dec 2009 16:12:04 +0800 Subject: [linux-dvb] /dev/dvb/adapter0/net0 <-- what is this for and how to use it? There is a guide I've found to setting this up (a few years ago) but I can't give an off-the-top-of-my-head pointer to this. Unless you want to receive a satellite-delivered multicast or unicast stream -- I'm not sure if there are any out there of interest to non-subscribers -- it something you wouldn't need to use. barry bouwsma From luca at ventoso.org Thu Dec 3 09:53:21 2009 From: luca at ventoso.org (Luca Olivetti) Date: Thu, 03 Dec 2009 09:53:21 +0100 Subject: [linux-dvb] siano firmware and behaviour after resuming power In-Reply-To: References: <4B14CC1E.7030102@ventoso.org> Message-ID: <4B177C81.5030900@ventoso.org> En/na BOUWSMA Barry ha escrit: > Sorry for not composing this reply sooner... Ah, ok, I got my sources from linuxtv and there's no firmware there. I found a something here http://marc.info/?l=linux-usb-users&m=116827193506484&w=2 that purportedly resets an usb device. What I tried was, before powering off: 1) unload the drivers 2) use the above to reset the stick 3) power off and, before loading the drivers, issue a reset again. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, the end result is that I cannot leave the device plugged-in if I want to use it. Not to mention the annoying blue led constantly on :-D > Those are just my observations -- as to whether this is a > more general USB stack problem, or whether each driver for > all these devices needs to be rewritten to handle this case > of a device in a warm state, I don't know as I'm unfamiliar > with the internal workings of USB or the devices. Oh, in case it would be helpful (meaning that either the previous, now snipped, filesizes would match your firmware, or these which I quote now match), here's what I dug out of the musty depths of the machine hidden away -- these are likely to be the files for the firmware as extracted from the CD-ROM that came with my device, if not downloaded elsewhere, based on the timestamps. As you can see, the file sizes differ between the two sources, but perhaps you can match them against the tarballs from Steven Toth, to determine whether your firmware is the same as either of these manufacturer- or vendor-supplied sources. I hope somebody will pick it up but I'm afraid it will lie dormant for some month. I am not sure if the whole thing is mature enough to mention it in the new device article template. I guess to have it there we will need somebody to take responsibility for PCI and PCIe devices. There are already a lot of those (though no where near as many as USB devices), and it would make sense to translate the data from that table, into a structured data set that can be included whereever it is needed. I have a good signal but the card can't deliver error free streams. Femon shows signal 0xf000-0xffff, snr 0xb0-0x110 and ber almost always 0. Some errors (transport error bit set or missing TS packet) occur in the stream about every 3 minutes on average. It's not a problem of linux driver since the same errors can be found in TS recordings taken under windows. And it is also not a problem with the signal because I get a much better result with AverTV A800 USB (error about every 4 hours) and Nova-T LSI L64781 PCI (error about every 2 hours). I assume that those problems are related to the tuner (correct me if I'm wrong). The MyGica T1680 USB stick is really bad, Nova-T PCI is quite good with good signal and AverTV A800 is the best, but it is discontinued product. I would like to build a dedicated STB with 2-3 DVB-T tuners. So my question is: Is there any well known DVB-T card (preferably USB) that has a sensitive and stable tuner that can deliver error free streams? Some errors (transport > error bit set or missing TS packet) occur in the stream about every 3 minutes This is just an idea -- I've experienced problems with certain USB ports on different hardware, with devices that work fine on other ports. There's no clear explanation that I can come up with -- it's a matter of trial-and-error. It could be a particular hub, or a particular USB card, or just one port on a PCI USB card when the other three work fine. I've never bothered to record and track down the combinations that result in this corruption -- I've just shuffled until I get something that works flawlessly. These have ranged from a glitch every few minutes, to a glitch every ten seconds or so. Another thing was that when I had chained the device that was throwing up an error every few minutes with another device, that second DVB-T tuner delivered a flawless stream. Only by relocating the common input from the two to a different USB input port, and possibly juggling PCI cards due to interrupts on my ancient machine, did things improve to eliminate errors from the one device. > on average. It's not a problem of linux driver since the same errors can be > found in TS recordings taken under windows. And it is also not a problem with > the signal because I get a much better result with AverTV A800 USB (error > about every 4 hours) and Nova-T LSI L64781 PCI (error about every 2 hours). You should get zero errors for many more hours than that with a clean signal. The worst I get has been one error every 20 or so hours on one transponder with 5/6 FEC on DVB-S. However, with DVB-T it can be very dependent on the antenna, with certain frequencies from one site being flawless when another from the same site is full of uncorrectable errors. When you say BER almost zero, I wonder about the times when it isn't zero. Here's my tuning for two signals: Signal=42662, Verror=146, SNR=65389dB, BlockErrors=0, (S|L|C|V|SY) Signal=42405, Verror=105, SNR=65430dB, BlockErrors=0, (S|L|C|V|SY) Signal=33153, Verror=0, SNR=65535dB, BlockErrors=0, (S|L|C|V|SY) Signal=33153, Verror=0, SNR=65535dB, BlockErrors=0, (S|L|C|V|SY) As you can see, the first signal has correctable errors, while the second should deliver a perfect stream. I have line-of-sight to both, but I don't have the patience to wait for the first to have an uncorrectable error. > I assume that those problems are related to the tuner (correct me if I'm > wrong). The MyGica T1680 USB stick is really bad, Nova-T PCI is quite good As I note, there are several possibilities. So, you may be right, or you may be wrong. It may be a less sensitive tuner. > I would like to build a dedicated STB with 2-3 DVB-T tuners. So my question > is: Is there any well known DVB-T card (preferably USB) that has a sensitive > and stable tuner that can deliver error free streams? The USB tuners I have all deliver error-free streams when connected to a decent USB port, and any errors I do see are fixed by slightly adjusting the antenna. But I'm in a strong signal location for the signals I quoted above, and the first one that hasn't popped up a block error yet will see a drop to 0 in the Verror field if I orient the antenna to a different polarisation. Note that DVB-T is meant to work with multipath interference that made analogue signals from the same transmitter sites unwatchable or with clear errors. So it wouldn't surprise me if on occasion there would be an uncorrectable error now and then in some receiving conditions (moving a small aerial while observing the analogue signal showed a marked change in the signal quality), and it is also affected by reflections that are supposed to be corrected. I'm not sure if this could be a factor for you. > Thanks for any tips, Hope this gives food for thought. barry bouwsma From abraham.manu at gmail.com Sat Dec 5 06:51:30 2009 From: abraham.manu at gmail.com (Manu Abraham) Date: Sat, 5 Dec 2009 09:51:30 +0400 Subject: [linux-dvb] Skystar HD2 and s2-liplianin/mantis driver In-Reply-To: <20091129153148.GA20727@localhost> References: <20091129153148.GA20727@localhost> Message-ID: <1a297b360912042151n24d8deadwfb1b3fd6dd671ba7@mail.gmail.com> On Sun, Nov 29, 2009 at 7:31 PM, Albert Gall wrote: > Hello list > > I try to build latest s2-liplianin drivers but make shows severals > warnings and module not load after build driver: > > WARNING: "ir_input_keydown" [s2-liplianin/v4l/mantis.ko] undefined! > WARNING: "ir_codes_mantis_vp1041_table" [s2-liplianin/v4l/mantis.ko] undefined! > WARNING: "ir_input_nokey" [s2-liplianin/v4l/mantis.ko] undefined! > WARNING: "ir_input_init" [s2-liplianin/v4l/mantis.ko] undefined! > WARNING: "ir_codes_mantis_vp2040_table" [s2-liplianin/v4l/mantis.ko] undefined! > WARNING: "ir_codes_mantis_vp2033_table" [s2-liplianin/v4l/mantis.ko] undefined! > > My kernel is 2.6.31.4. > The attached is full driver build log. > > Any idea to fix this problem ? I've downloaded and installed the firmware in /lib/firmware as per the instructions on the LinuxDVB web site and it appears to pick it up and I've even tried compiling the v4l-dvb drivers too which didn't appear to make any difference. Just to check it wasn't me going mad, I tried the dvb-utils scan utility and also Kaffene, both of which doesn't work (and I can't find a /dev/dvb directory either). I removed the one splitter being used, connected to the main cable coming into the house, isolated the grounds with no change in sync issues. I pulled the pvr-150 card out of the linux machine and put it into my window box, hooked it up to the original setup splitter and no ground isolation and the video is crystal clear with no sync issues. I can only come up with a few possible problems, but I am sure there are more. Could this be a driver issue on my linux box? Could a bad or failing PCI slot cause this problem? However the sync problem is not on every channel. I'm going to try moving the linux box across the house to see if there is a source of EMI near by, but since the windows box doesn't have this issue I assume this is a problem with the linux box. -Rob On Tue, Nov 24, 2009 at 6:43 PM, Andy Walls wrote: > On Tue, 2009-11-24 at 13:05 -0500, Robert Longfield wrote: >> I have a PVR-150 card running on mythbuntu 9 and it appears that my >> card is suffering a vertical (and possibly a horizontal) sync issue. >> >> The video jumps around, shifts from side to side, up and down and when >> it shifts the video wraps. Given your results, yes it is most likely a linux driver issue. The suspects would be the cx25840 module, or the modules for the analog tuner. What analog tuner assembly type does the tveeprom module show for your card in dmesg? Also what video standard are you capturing: NTSC or something else? > Could a bad or failing PCI slot cause this problem? No. A *very* busy PCI bus may cause some I2C transactions that set up the tuner or CX25843 to fail, but it is more likely simply a suboptimal tuner or CX25843 configuration issue. > However the sync > problem is not on every channel. > > I'm going to try moving the linux box across the house to see if there > is a source of EMI near by, but since the windows box doesn't have > this issue I assume this is a problem with the linux box. I suppose you could try a linux liveCD in the Windows box and use $ cat /dev/video0 > foo.mpg to capture video. Then move foo.mpg to a USB flash disk and play back foo.mpg where ever it is convenient. If foo.mpg shows artifacts then you can be somewhat sure of a linux driver issue. > -Rob > > On Tue, Nov 24, 2009 at 6:43 PM, Andy Walls wrote: > > On Tue, 2009-11-24 at 13:05 -0500, Robert Longfield wrote: > >> I have a PVR-150 card running on mythbuntu 9 and it appears that my > >> card is suffering a vertical (and possibly a horizontal) sync issue. > >> > >> The video jumps around, shifts from side to side, up and down and when > >> it shifts the video wraps. The card runs fine except when it comes to the in-built remote sensor: Whenever I press any button, the remote sensor seems to receive some other keycodes aside the proper one (i.e. when I press Volume Up button the sensor receives it most of the time, but sometimes it understands some other buttons are pressed like ArrowDown, Red button and so, making MythTV experience very annoying). There are only three buttons that are always well received with no confusion at all: "OK", "ArrowDown" and "Play". This behavior occurs with two identical remotes I own (one of them belonging to a WinTV HVR-1100) and another card user has reported a similar behavior with its own and same remote. I tested both remotes with the HVR-1100 and they behave perfectly, so I guess this is not a remote related issue. Though I have tried several LIRC setup files and swapped dvb_usb_dib0700 firmware files (1.10 and 1.20 versions) they make no working difference at all. I also tried rebuilding v4l-dvb code to no avail. Any suggestions? I would gladly provide further info/logs upon request. Message-ID: <938B2714-17EB-476A-8EB0-5C42894E60DC@lollisoft.de> Hi, I am new here and start with a setup question. The media or NAS server I think about: http://plugcomputer.org/ It has a high speed USB 2.0 port and a gigabit Lan. Using Linux and VLC as the streaming server, would this be good for streaming full HD videos from a attached USB hard drive? The streaming client in mind: http://www.fit-pc.com/web/ Would it be possible to use this box (the cheapest one is about 299 ? + shipping in germany) with XBMC or other stuff? I mean saving the hard drives in the client box when a SAN is used. Both could use Linux and thus fully controlled and tweaked for best performing as a media center solution. The reason why I ask is because my brother want's to save money and don't like to waste money for hardware components that may not really needed. Other devices in mind were these components: http://www.openpr.de/news/365458/Movie-Cube-S800H-Genuss-fuer-Augen-und-Ohren.html http://www.tomsnetworking.de/content/aktuelles/news_beitrag/news/3828/index.html But is there the opportunity to use the media from the movie cube to be streamed to other computers? This sounds like an interlacing issue -- I suspect you are using some player that delivers 25 full frames per second to your display instead of somehow getting 50 partial fields from them or interpolating the fields into 50 frames per second. This is fairly normal when not dealing with progressive material (720p HD video, or 1080i HD or even SD video taken from source material such as film shot at 24 fps). Most players have options to enable one of any number of deinterlacers, some of which work better than others for selected movement. (There are many different commandline options for `mplayer', one of which will present the fields of a 576i video as 288-line images which helps decipher fast-scrolling text, for example.) If you are reproducing your video at your display's native resolution without zooming it to fullscreen, you can see each of the jagged lines matching one pixel vertical resolution. barrry bouwsma From robert.longfield at gmail.com Fri Dec 18 21:24:21 2009 From: robert.longfield at gmail.com (Robert Longfield) Date: Fri, 18 Dec 2009 15:24:21 -0500 Subject: [linux-dvb] Hauppauge PVR-150 Vertical sync issue? I wasn't too overly concerned with it as I thought it might be a playback issue. I certainly have a lot more trouble shooting to do before I figure out where the issue lies with this hardware. -Rob On Fri, Dec 18, 2009 at 3:17 PM, BOUWSMA Barry wrote: > On Fri, 18 Dec 2009, Robert Longfield wrote: > >> Ok so I ran a live CD on my windows box and there were no sync >> problems. I'd like to use 2 or 3 S2-36xx parts with a Quad monoblock LNB (Lemon-Inverto) which in principle contains a DiSEqC switch. I tried an earlier HG pull from September but my LNB seems to receive only Hotbird channels, and not all of them to begin with. No Astra channels so far. I see no mentions of a newer DiSEqC code in pctv452e.c in the changelog - was there any progress on this? TIA! -- We really don't have any enemies. So on the weekend I was able to steal a few minutes to properly trouble shoot the issue now that I know it was in the mythbuntu box. As a long shot I pulled out the Promise Tech Ultra133 TX2 / ATA card I am using for the backup drive. With this card removed the sync issue went away, when I put the card back in the issue returned. Now this card was in the slot right next to the PVR-150 card. I moved the controller card as far away as I could get from the PVR-150 and the sync issue was gone. So it would appear that the Promise Tech card was causing some EM interference with the PVR-150 card. I will keep an eye on this to make sure that this was indeed the issue. Does it seem reasonable that this card would kick out interference like this? -Rob On Fri, Dec 18, 2009 at 3:13 PM, Steven Toth wrote: >> So it looks like the problem is restricted to my mythbuntu box. > > Congrats, that's better news. > > -- > Steven Toth - Kernel Labs > http://www.kernellabs.com > From dheitmueller at kernellabs.com Mon Dec 21 21:13:16 2009 From: dheitmueller at kernellabs.com (Devin Heitmueller) Date: Mon, 21 Dec 2009 15:13:16 -0500 Subject: [linux-dvb] Hauppauge PVR-150 Vertical sync issue? Having worked at a lab that did EMI compliance testing, I can definitely tell some stories of cases far stranger than that. But yeah, if the card works in a different slot, then it's unlikely any sort of PCI bus congestion issue but rather an EMI problem. Devin -- Devin J. Perhaps you may also wish to consider an external (USB connected) capture device. A PC can internally have many sources of square waves that have either fundamental or harmonic frequencies in UHF. The metal case of a PC can greatly reduce the EMI on outside of the case. Thank you for this! Very useful since it's hard to be outside aiming and inside looking at a monitor at the same time. :) From drappa at iinet.net.au Wed Dec 30 03:38:22 2009 From: drappa at iinet.net.au (drappa) Date: Wed, 30 Dec 2009 12:38:22 +1000 Subject: [linux-dvb] Compro VideoMate U80 DVB-T USB 2.0 High Definition Digital TV Stick Message-ID: <4B3ABD1E.8050403@iinet.net.au> Hi All http://www.comprousa.com/en/product/u80/u80.html I'd be grateful if anyone can tell me if this device is supported yet, and if so, any pointers to getting it working. Several months ago I bought a USB dual DVB-T tuner (KWorld PlusTV) and was in a similar position to you, just a different model of stick. With Windows, the job would have been straightforward, as Windows has an architecture for adding new USB products. A couple of entries in the registry, a driver for the chipset, and you're away. With Linux, you've a choice of spending 35 hours trying to patch and recompile the kernel so that the new device is recognised, or if that sounds too onerous, wait 6 to 12 months until it's included in the standard kernel. While I recognise that I cannot legitimately complain, since Linux is a take-it-or-leave-it arrangement where if there's a problem, I should ideally volunteer to fix it myself, I still do think that it's bizarre that a recompile of the kernel is needed. I ask myself why it is not possible to have a database of devices (like the Windows registry) which can be easily updated. This would allow simple installation of new products which use chipsets identical to existing supported products. [The outcome with my tuner so far.... after a failed attempt at patching the kernel, I waited till 2.6.32 kernel was available, upon which the device was recognised, but still can only get one of the two tuners operating. This will likely be the subject of a separate forum thread in the near future.] Sorry I cannot shed light on your particular model of tuner. I will conclude by saying incidentally, that I have been a very satisifed user of mythTV (with multiple PCI tuners) for the last two and a bit years. dave
