I've resolved this by using:
-P"xineliboutput --primary --local=none --remote=37890"

and
xine "xvdr:tcp://127.0.0.1:37890#nocache;demux:mpeg_block"   # for tcp

rather than --local=sxfe

seems to have fixed the slips etc....

now to get vdr-sxfe working on the remote machine.......
