The term Digital Video Broadcasting (short DVB) is originally a synonym for Digital TV that would broadcast video digitally instead of Analog TV transmissions. On the technical side the term DVB is a synonym to the DVB Standard which defines the encoding of the digital video streams used for broadcasting.

Digital TV or Digital Video Broadcasting, is a set of standards for the transmission of digital video and audio.

DVB consists of data packets, which carry MPEG2 coded video/audio and EPG combined with other payload encapsulated in MPEG2 Transport Streams. Depending on the transmission path there a different kinds of Digital TV, which are using different Modulation Schemes, frequencies, transmission parameters and are optimized for different transmission networks and target devices.
