I tried an NLX system, but it stays in the living
room. (It has a fan.) For the bedroom I bought
an iDVD 3036 (no fan).

For the first stage, I plan to have a KFir card
in the iDVD box connected to my satellite receiver.
The hard drive will be in one of my office
computers. Later, I hope to get a DVB card or two
and put them in a remote computer, also. (I'm
tempted to put these in a computer that's up in the
attic, a few feet from the dish.)

I leave my computers on all the time and I get
annoyed if I try to sleep and my Sony VCR is still
in "standby" mode (where the video head is still
spinning), so I am not willing to put up with any
constant noise other than a switching power supply.
(I plan to rip DVDs to the remote disk for playback
so that I can shut off the DVD drive.)

I'm planning on giving a review of the iDVD box
here as soon as I test it a bit. I'd like to see a
platform like this that we can all point to and say
"This works if you want to..." I think it will
help bring new people into the community. ("Buy
this. Install this. You'll have a silent
networked video recorder, DVD player, satellite
receiver, music player and game console.")

Add a backend appliance (file server and network
firewall) to support it and local Linux groups
could provide complete home systems. What a hit
that could be for Christmas!
