Well, believe it or not, but suddenly everything works fine!
What I did was to do

  make xconfigure
  make
  make modules

in /usr/src/linux, but I did _not_ do any "make install" or so (and the
above commands were issued as a "normal" user).
After that I also recompiled the driver and now it works.

Sorry for the disturbances. Maybe nobody else has this kind of problems,
because you all make your own kernels... ;-)
