Do the following:
1) ntuxzap -e  (I hope you have a .dvbrc file)
2) In ntuxzap look for e.g. n-tv, or any other FTA channel and select
   it by pressing return  You will have use the cursor keys to move to
   the channel, so that you are sure you selected it. if you only type
   it, you may not select it correctly.
3) Use CTRL-Z to exit ntuxzap (NOT CTRL-C) or use a new terminal and type 
   cat /dev/ost/dvr > file
4) ls -la file

Has the file a length?
Do all of that as root, so that you don't have any trouble with
permissions.
