I think it's problems with the voltage level.

On my machine, which is wired up the same way, I have to set the "line 
input" level on the soundblaster audio mixer quite low and turn the volume 
up high on the stereo. That gives me undistorted output. But if I turn the 
stereo volume down and turn the "line input" level up, I get distortion. I 
think the DVB card is giving more output volts than the line-in can cope with.
