Well I used an old numeric keypad of an old computer, removed it's original electronics and replaced them with the ones from an old remote. 
The buttons are painted with "permament" marker which quite rapidly wears off.

Other ideas for remotes might be based on C-Control units. The speaker output might be good for driving LEDs.
Or you could build a radio-based one, or voice controlling.
