This is no problem, get a Linux PC, a DVB-S card about 10000km of cable and a satellite dish. ;)
Well really, you can use VDR with a DVB-S card, if you have unscrambled transmissions in DVB. I don't know if there are any in the US.

This is a special device recently (1961) introduced by Loewe, to enable consumers to record TV-shows themselves. Unlike previous machines this one is really easy to use.
You just threadt the tape and press record or play. It can even just hold the image still and stuff. There are newer devices, but I don't want to shock you with color :)

This machine has a numeric keypad where you just enter the start as well as the end-time of the show you want to record. Every recording will have a "timestamp" on tape.
For example, if you just recorded a 2 hour recording and your second recording follows afterwards, you just pressed 2 0 0 Ziellauf, and nomatter what position the tape is in
you imediately go to the recording. You can record 16 hours on a single tape (but you'll have to turn it over after 8 hours.

So don't be sad, if you can't find any unscrambled digital services.
