I believe I already did that when I defined the original set of keys for VDR.
The Concept is based on the presence of cursor movement keys (up/down/left/right)
which are also used for play/pause/rewind/forward, a 'menu', 'back' and 'ok' button
and four colored keys, which are heavily used in the OSD menus for various
functions, as indicated at the bottom of the menu. This is IMHO pretty much the
smallest set of keys that allows a versatile menu system to be implemented.
The number keys as well as the more recently added volume and power keys
are additional "sugar", but they are not _absolutely_ necessary to operate VDR.
Ok, we can have additional keys if that's what people really crave for, but
that won't change the fact that any functionality should always be accessible
also via the basic set of keys. Imagine you find a plugin somewhere that implements
a nice function you want to use, but in order to do so you'd need to buy a new
remote control, just because the author of the plugin decided to have ten
new keys, which aren't available on your particular RC.

The basic VDR set of remote control keys (the "reference", if you wish) is the one
that is implemented in VDR. I'll probably draw a picture some day that defines that
remote control. Any additional keys may be there, of course, and I have no problem
with defining them in VDR, but they can only have meanings that must also be accessible
otherwise. It cannot be that the various plugins all define their own sets of
keys and force users to have either several different RCs, or one large piece
of equipment that has so many keys that nobody can moemorize all their meanings.

Please, let's keep things simple!
