Lots of documentation comes with VDR itself, the files "INSTALL" and 
"MANUAL" (I think)

I translated them into German and put these documents online at

Another very good source, if you understand German, is Hubertus 
Sandmann's Site at http://home.t-online.de/home/hubertus.sandmann/
