You were right.

The drive was udma5 enabled but not the interface. My disk performance 
has jumped from 2MB/s to 36MB/s!
vdr now records perfectly without picture break up.

Thanks for the quick help.

P.S. Will vdr also benefit from using the interupt masking option?
