Looks like a failure of the scaler - just alike artifacts you get using JPEG 
compression. Maybe your Xv-Adaptor has several filter quality settings (see 
xvinfo) - you might want to set it to "enabled" or suchalike in code.

Does the shadow appear only if you make the image larger than the source 
material or every size?

Also it might be a special problem with that graphics card...
