I just read a part of mplayer documentation telling that it can be used to display a tv-card stream, here in deutsch :

It is able to display on the dvb-tvout too, but i'm sure you already now.
And with mencoder, it is not far from vdr
What do you think about it ? Have I misunderstood what you wanted to say ?
