[vdr] Questions from new VDR user

I've set up VDR during last weekend for use on the Helsinki cable
network. I have a Hauppauge DVB-C card, a CI and a Conax CAM, plus an
extra smartcard from the cable company.

I've successfully used VDR to produce a few recordings, but since my
computer is not directly connected to the television (and I've not yet
set up Lirc or such a similar remote control tool) I'm controlling VDR
using VDRadmin. Next I need to get some external software to edit down
the MPEG stream, anyone have suggestions here? Is "lve" any good?

Two questions that I've been unable to answer reading the manuals and
info pages now have turned up:

Firstly,

Is there a known problem with VDR which manifests as encrypted
channels disappearing from the VDRadmin "What's on" main menu? When I
leave the thing alone for the night (my main computer's always on) and
come back in the morning, there probably are no encrypted channels
showing up in this menu. If I restart VDR (which I've arranged to
unload and reload the kernel modules) the channels slowly reappear in
this menu.

Secondly,

Is the data stream VDR writes to disk the complete original
off-the-cable stream, or has it been pruned down to a single sound
channel? There are a couple of channels (like Cartoon Network, don't
laugh!) which are transmitted by the cable company as a strange mess
with swedish/norwegian as the right and left main channels with the
original english soundtrack (which I want) on the left in a secondary
audio channel with danish as the right channel. These are somehow
mislabeled in the DVB stream, so that my external digital receiver
treats them as left and right instead of mono streams -- or something
like that. So, does VDR write all the audio channels into the saved
file (playing around with Xine doesn't seem to find any, at least) or
does only the "main" channel get recorded? Can I adjust this, or
should I lobby the cable company to get this "feature" fixed?

Anyway, thanks for a fantastic program!
