There is no advantage except that these cards are really cheap.

?!? sorry, I don't understand you. They do their job and are cheap,
isn't this advantage enough?

well you save 100€, but loose one pc, or at least quite some resources,
esp. if you actually do what you promote: fancy osd, p-i-p, osd overlays, mpeg4, HDTV, ip streaming.

Please scroll back in the mailing list archive. Even yesterdays Macs and PCs are powerful enough to decode MPEG2 and DivX. For HDTV you need less than 2GHz, this is still ways less than today's processors provide.

my old 400Mhz celeron was not enough for xine-plugin, and mplayer is a
primer no solution (de-interlace was allways disabled anyways).
a 2200+ AMD is totaly blocked when decodig HDTV, yes i DID test that with
the astra test sigal, it was nice, but there are years to come until that is
needed.

For MPEG2 demultiplexing (in software) and streaming a dbox2 is sufficient, this box contains a 66MHz MPC823 - this is a Motorola PowerPC core with some onchip peripherals and tiny caches.
well it's no i386, and you know that, and having a sw demultiplexer is not
all what we need, it is just data moving.
b.t.w. replay does not work, so out-> yes, in -> no (some stuff works, but
most boxes are to weak to shuffel the data fas enough)
