I can see why the umlaut ('ö') might be a problem and will replace it with
"oe".

That'd probably do, though ideally it would be something which is interpreted
as "oe" where "ö" isn't available (much as "\(co" is, to either "(C)" or
"©").


But what in the world is wrong with a simple '-'??? This _is_ a 7-bit ASCII
character, after all!

So's \ :-)

In a UTF-8 environment, the *roff interpreter converts "-" into \xE2\x80\x90
(code point 0x2010) but leaves "\-" alone - and it's not unknown for people
to copy and paste from man pages :-)
Boy, do I hate UTF-8...
