That'd probably do, though ideally it would be something which is interpreted
as "oe" where "ö" isn't available (much as "\(co" is, to either "(C)" or
"©").

So's \ :-)
In a UTF-8 environment, the *roff interpreter converts "-" into \xE2\x80\x90
(code point 0x2010) but leaves "\-" alone - and it's not unknown for people
to copy and paste from man pages :-)
