Whoops. Wrong format. You need to create a fresh channels.conf:

  # scan -u -o vdr /usr/share/doc/dvb-utils/examples/dvb-t/uk-PontopPike \
    > /var/lib/vdr/channels.conf

(Of course, you'll want to use the tuning data file for your local
transmitter.)
