Yes, it takes an effort to be able to use UTF-8 internally and convert input and output
accordingly, but this is definitely the way to go. This is what every linux app is supposed
to do.

Not supporting UTF-8 breaks things too; Linux apps are supposed to use UTF-8 encoded
filenames. For VDR, the video partition has to be mounted with iocharset options.
This option is not available on all filesystems (like ReiserFS) and is even harder when
the video spool is not on a separate partition.
