But:

The problem is not to detect "HDTV", the problenm seems to be that
"invalid" or "unknown" data is processed.

Ask the programmer of the firmware, why he can't do parameter
validations and "trusts" the data from satellite blindly.

- But the firmware could do parameter validation and
  avoid memory wrap arrounds (assuming that this is the problem).

- The VDR "emergency exit" could (generally) set the "startup channels"
  to something known reliable? (maybe the time sync channel
  which would have the advantage that the clock can be adjusted immediately
  after each restart.)
  That would avoid other kind endless restart loops too.

- What will happen if there will more HDTV FTA channels popp up?

- What happens if EPG scan would select it?
  The user only sees:
  Screen blacks for a few seconds, and/or the recordings are broken
  after the first hour and comes to the conclusion:
  "That <censored> open source <censored> dies without 
  any visible reason!"
