There are three kinds of channels.conf entries that I consider garbage.

1) channels that are no longer in service.

One way of handling this:
Once a week, run a script that puts some special recognizable character in front of the name, like '-'. Channels that are still available will revert to their original name on next epg scan. Channels that are gone will collect -'s over time, and you can simply delete channels that are staring with '----', as they werent seen for 4 weeks.
I like that idea because it's very simple. :-)

Of course, it does not help me to get rid of channels that I cannot descramble,
but at least it helps me to get rid of completely dead channels.

I tried this and it works quite well, but not 100% perfect.
Most of my channels.conf entries got rid of the -------- mark immediately,
but strangely, some entries kept the mark even when I tuned to them.
Some of them are even broadcasting picture and sound,
but still keep the wrong name. Here are a few examples:

ESA----------:12551:vC56:S19.2E:22000:305:306=eng:0:0:12140:1:1108:0
DT3----------:12363:vC34:S19.2E:27500:162:0:0:100:9152:1:1098:0
MOSA 2----------:12324:V:S19.2E:27500:163:1921=fra,1922=fra,1923=fra,1924=fra,1925=fra,1926=fra,1927=fra,1928=fra,1929=fra,1930=fra,1931=fra,1932=fra,1933=fra,1934=fra,1935=fra,1936=fra,1937=fra,1938=fra,1939=fra,1940=fra:0:0:8604:0:0:0

Can anyone explain why VDR corrects the names of most other valid entries,
but leaves a few dozen as they are, even though they are actively
brodcasted?

Carsten.
