The device to handle this DVD is /dev/sr0, and thats afaik a SCSI device.
I can mount CDs and even DVDs and I can read and copy anything on it.
The kernel modules are afaik native SCSI support, SCSI CD-support and
USB Mass-storage support.
It seems to me that native access to DVD is no problem, but libdvdcss and
libdvdread want to access the DVD in a specific "hardware" way.
I tried to find any other device that works, but I was not sucessfull :-((

For me USB is the only way to use DVD and/or S/VCD with VDR, because my
server
is not in my living room (it is very noisy; P4 2,2 GHz, 500 GB) and so I
have
to use a long cable (15 meters) to connect a DVD to the VDR.

Sure, you are right, but I think even with kernel 2.4.10 and USB 1.1
it would not work.
