I assume, that 106 is an encrypted channel.
The 3rd last entry in the lines of your channels.conf describes the
decryption mode for encrypted channels. "0" means "no encryption". If you
are looking a free channel, you have to use "0". If it's encypted and you
are using "0", you can see only a black screen. If you using a decryption
code but your vdr does not support this encryption algorithm (no ca-module
onboard, wrong ca.conf, no pay-TV chip, ..) you get the "can't start
transfer mode". Maybe the vdr crashes, too. I get only the message.
