You're right mencoder is part of mplayer !

But i do not know convert or tosvcd :-(
I can only tell that my vdr2divx 1.56beta2 scripts work with mplayer/mencoder 
from early June and i guess they also do with current cvs ! But i have not 
tested this, yet - lack of time !

However afaik major changes to mplayer/mencoder regarding syntax and 
commandline parameters which could affect externel encoders were done in the 
early pre versions - not in the last ones - so it should work !
Correct me if i'm wrong.
