[vdr] converting vdr to mpeg does not work

hi,

i want to archive some startrek-episodes. after cutting one is about 1gb.
i want to reduce its size to about 700mb to fit on a cd. i tried to
convert the .vdr files with pvastrumente and ds.jar to an mpeg(ps) file.
it worked, the mediaplayer on winxp played it. but here is the first
problem, the files have a 480x576 resolution which is not what i wanted. i
tried to recode it with tmpgenc, to get a resultion of about 320x288
(the half of pal), but it can not read the format. i have no
idea why. then i tried to convert the .vdr to divx, with mplayer. it
worked, i can play it with mplayer, but it also has the 480x576. then i
tried to convert the divx back to mpeg with tmpgenc. it worked, but only
sound, not video. so can anyone give me a hint how to convert a .vdr-file
of about 1gb to a mpeg-file of about 700mb which fits on a cd an plays
well on mediaplayer and mplayer within vdr?
